Australian Open Tennis 2009

The demand for Australian Open tennis betting odds keeps growing as the youngest of the grand slam tournaments raises its profile with every passing year. The Australian Open started in 1905, which means that it is a few years younger than the French Open (1891), Wimbledon (1877) and US Open (1881), but it gets much more attention now than it did beforethe competition moved to Melbourne Park in 1988.

The first of the four majors, it's held at the start of the tennis year and so is a benchmark for the rest of the season. The list of previous winners reads like a who's who of tennis legends: Agassi, Sampras, Hingis, Lendl, Seles, Wilander, Navratilova, Connors, Court and Emerson.

Australian Open is one of the world's premier tennis tournaments.

The Australian Open reaches its climax on February 1 with the men's singles championship match.

The Australian open tennis mens event has all the makings of an outstanding contest although some people are saying that it's really a contest between 4 players. The big 4 - Roger Federer, Raphael Nadal, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic are all in contention but then no one can be ruled out in this contest and players such as Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Juan Martin Del Potro, Gilles Simon and Andy Roddick have everything to play for.

The women's singles final is held on January 31.

The Australian open womens event is no less interesting; with Maria Sharipova having pulled out leaving a vacant title and a field of strong determined players eager to take her place. Venus Williams and Serena Williams are the favourites in this competition with Jelena Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic following close behind with excellent odds for an upset.

Melbourne Park Stadium will play host to all the top ranked tennis players in world tennis. The Australian open is a notoriously tough event, with searing temperatures often reaching 90 degrees and organisers have had to institute an Extreme Heat Policy to regulate when conditions are notviable for international competition.

In an effort to combat the effects of Melbourne's extreme weather, a retractable roof was constructed over the centre court, known as the Rod Laver Arena since the year 2000.

Australian Open Tennis - The Basics

The Australian Open tennis tournament is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments. The Australian Open tennis tournament, now permanently played at Melbourne Park, is the first Grand Slam event of the year. It now occurs during the last two weeks of January but was formerly held in December.

Held in the middle of the Australian summer, the Australian Open is famous for its notoriously hot days. An extreme-heat policy is often put into play when temperatures (and humidity) reach dangerous levels.

Like the other Grand Slam events the Australian Open singles champions are the ultimate survivors of a 128-person draw, with doubles titles contested froma 64-team draw and the mixed doubles a 32-team affair.

Many tennis afficenados belive that the Australian Open tennis is the best contest of the year as its scheduling at the start of the tennis year allows for peak player fitness and the entry of nearly all of the world's top players.

Traditionally, accomplishing a slam is to win all four majors in a calendar year; recently tennis fans have adopted
the shorthand of referring to each of the four parts of the Slam (Australian, French, Wimbledon and US Opens) as a slam in itself. The Australian Rod Laver was the last man to complete a Grand Slam in men's singles in 1969. On the women's side, Steffi Graf was the last woman to win a Grand Slam in 1988, and she also won the Olympic Gold in Seoul in the same year, making it a Golden Slam.

The two major associations are described below

ATP Tour
In 1988 members of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) convened a press conference in the parking lot at the US Open to announce to the world that they were taking over control of the game. The use of the parking lot emphasized the point that they were banned from using on-site facilities by the then ruling body, the Men's Tennis Council. By 1990 a significant number of players as well as tournament directors had signed up.

This has evolved into something that is quite unique in the sporting world, an equal partnership between players and tournament organizers. In January 2001 the ATP Tour name was shortened to ATP
.

WTA Tour
The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) went through a similar battle as the ATP to improve the lot of women tennis professionals. Back in 1970, women were being paid only one third of the prize money that men were earning.

It took a handful of determined players to buck the system and start up their own 3 tournament circuit.
In the following year this grew to 19 tournaments and the rest is history. Equal prize money for men and women's now the standard for international tennis.

Some facts and History of Australian Open

The Australasian Tennis Championship were first held in 1905 at the Warehouseman's Cricket
Ground in St Kilda Road, Melbourne, in the same city that it was destined to return to for good.
It was originally organized by the Lawn Tennis Association of Australia, which has since been
renamed to Tennis Australia. After a brief break during the First World War, the women's singles
tournament was added in 1922 and the competition was renamed the Australian Championships in 1927.
