Australian Open Tennis 2010 |
The demand for Australian Open
tennis betting odds keeps growing as the youngest of the grand slam
tournaments raises its profile with every passing year. The
Australian Open started in 1905, which means that it is a few years
younger than the French Open (1891), Wimbledon (1877) and US Open
(1881), but it gets much more attention now than it did before the
competition moved to Melbourne Park in 1988.
The first of the four majors, it's
held at the start of the tennis year and so is a benchmark for the
rest of the season. The list of previous winners reads like a who's
who of tennis legends: Agassi, Sampras, Hingis, Lendl, Seles,
Wilander, Navratilova, Connors, Court and Emerson. |

Australian Open is one of the
world's premier tennis tournaments. |
Australian
Open Tennis - The Basics
The Australian Open tennis tournament is one of the four Grand Slam
tennis tournaments. The Australian Open tennis tournament, now
permanently played at Melbourne Park, is the first Grand Slam event of
the year. It now occurs during the last two weeks of January but was
formerly held in December.
Held in the middle of the Australian summer, the Australian Open is
famous for its notoriously hot days. An extreme-heat policy is often
put into play when temperatures (and humidity) reach dangerous levels.
Like the other Grand Slam events the Australian Open singles champions
are the ultimate survivors of a 128-person draw, with doubles titles
contested froma 64-team draw and the mixed doubles a 32-team affair.
Many tennis afficenados belive that the Australian Open tennis is the
best contest of the year as its scheduling at the start of the tennis
year allows for peak player fitness and the entry of nearly all of the
world's top players.
Traditionally, accomplishing a slam is to win all four majors in a
calendar year; recently tennis fans have adopted
the shorthand of referring to each of the four parts of the Slam
(Australian, French, Wimbledon and US Opens) as a slam in itself. The
Australian Rod Laver was the last man to complete a Grand Slam in
men's singles in 1969. On the women's side, Steffi Graf was the last
woman to win a Grand Slam in 1988, and she also won the Olympic Gold
in Seoul in the same year, making it a Golden Slam.

The Australasian Tennis
Championship were first held in 1905 at the Warehouseman's Cricket
Ground in St Kilda Road, Melbourne, in the same city that it was
destined to return to for good.
It was originally organized by the Lawn Tennis Association of Australia, which has since been
renamed to Tennis Australia. After a brief break during the First World
War, the women's singles
tournament was added in 1922 and the competition was renamed the Australian Championships in 1927.

Novak
Djokovic from Serbia, the 3rd ranked player in the world has toppled
sentimental favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in 4 sets to win his first
Grand Slam final at the Australian Open at the age of 20. |
Neither
Sharapova, nor Ivanovic played great tennis, and at the end of the day
it was the player that made the least unforced error who triumphed,
and that was the fifth seed, Maria Sharapova. Maria Sharapova wins
her third Grand Slam title, taking out Ana Ivanovic in the final of
the Australian Open. |
