French Open winner Rafael Nadal

Rafael Nadal has beaten world number one Roger Federer in four sets during the men's final of the French Open this morning.

By bringing Federer to his knees with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 exhibition, Nadal took his place alongside Bjorn Borg as the only men to have won a hat-trick of trophies at Roland Garros in 93 years.

The jeers were brief in the French Open rematch between Serena Williams and Justine Henin. The result was the same.

Henin won again.

Keeping Williams on the move with her versatile shotmaking, three-time champion Henin advanced to the semifinals with a 6-4, 6-3 victory on Tuesday.

The meeting was their first at Roland Garros since 2003, when a semifinal victory by Henin included boos for Williams and left a bitter taste on both sides.

The lone jeers this time came when a frustrated Williams slammed her racket to the clay when she lost serve in the opening game of the second set.

The boos quickly subsided, and while the crowd favoured the French-speaking Henin, they applauded Williams when she left the court after the match.

 Rafael Nadal powers past Federer for second straight French Open triumph

Rafael Nadal captured a second consecutive French Open crown and ran his unbeaten streak at Roland Garros to 14-0 by shaking off early jitters to defeat top-ranked Roger Federer of Switzerland 1-6, 6-1, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).

Nadal denied Federer the chance to become the first man since Rod Laver and only the third ever to hold all four Grand Slam titles at the same time. Laver, who did it in 1962 and 1969, and Don Budge, who did it in 1938, won theirs in calendar years. Federer was bidding to do so over the course of two years.

Justine Henin-Hardenne finished off the most dominant Roland Garros campaign in over a decade by repelling Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-4, 6-4 to retain her French Open title in Paris on Saturday.

Not since Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario's 1994 triumph had the women's champion won the claycourt Grand Slam without dropping a set in the tournament.

Henin-Hardenne won 6-4, 6-4 with great court coverage; a mixture of angles, depth, and power on her groundstrokes; and solid serving. Svetlana's biggest shot is her forehand, but she went for too much too often instead of using the safer topspin to extend points, keep the ball above Justine's strike zone, and make Justine work harder for each point. Justine was starting to look fatigued in the second set, so longer points would have worked to Svetlana's advantage in both the short and the long term. With this third French Open title, Justine has, like Rafael, established herself as the toughest current player on clay.

  Teenager Rafael Nadal wins French Open

Rafael Nadal, the new king of clay, put on a show worthy of the royalty watching him. Red dust caked Nadal from his hair to his sneakers after his French Open triumph Sunday, the charismatic teen who plays with a pugnacious smirk holding both dirty hands up to a beaming King Juan Carlos of Spain in the box above.

On this day, the scruffy Spanish kid with tears in his eyes assumed his own moment of majesty.

"All the work you've been doing during all those years, the sacrifices, when you reach your goal, it's an extraordinary moment," Nadal said. "For the first time I cried after winning a match." 

In a match as enthralling as it was brilliantly played, Nadal overcame an inspired performance by unseeded Argentine Mariano Puerta, 6-7 (6), 6-3, 6-1, 7-5, to become the youngest men's Grand Slam champion since Michael Chang won the French at 17 in 1989.

Justine Henin wraps up French Open title 

Justine Henin-Hardenne strolled to her second French Open crown, ruthlessly defeating Mary Pierce 6-1 6-1.

The Belgian 10th seed crushed the hopes of French fans as she battered home favourite Pierce with a flurry of forehands and driving backhands.

In overcast conditions, Henin broke Pierce three times on her way to taking the first set in just 24 minutes.

Pierce crumbled under the relentless pressure and handed Henin victory on her comeback from a viral condition.

Henin has struggled with fatigue and back injuries on her way to the final but was at her brilliant best on Philippe Chatrier Court.

The 23-year-old did not look back after Pierce held her first service-game, sweeping to nine games in a row.

Anastasia Myskina defeated fellow Russian Elena Dementieva Sunday to win the 2004 French Open in the first ever all- Russian Grand Slam final. Myskina, who won her second title of the season, beat her childhood friend in surprisingly easy fashion. After winning the first set 6-1, the sixth-seeded 22-year old took the second set 6-2.
