Rafael Nadal wins 2008 French Open Men's Singles

It was a record breaking day for Spain’s Rafael Nadal at Rolland Garos yesterday, as the ‘King of Clay’ claimed his fourth consecutive French Open title by handing Roger Federer one of the heaviest defeats of his career.

Nadal required only three sets to eliminate the world number one and join Bjorn Borg as the only men’s singles player to have won four titles in Paris. Nadal scored the final point
of the match without fanfare, jogging to the net to shake his devastated opponent’s hand.
Ana Ivanovic wins French Open women's singles

Already assured of rising to No. 1 in the rankings for the first time, Ivanovic collected Grand Slam title No. 1 by beating Dinara Safina 6-4, 6-3 in the French Open final Saturday.

A year ago, Ana Ivanovic was rattled early in the French Open final. This year she took early leads in both sets to win her first Grand Slam title.

Rafael Nadal has beaten world number one Roger Federer in four sets during the men's final of the French Open this morning.

By bringing Federer to his knees with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 exhibition, Nadal took his place alongside Bjorn Borg as the only men to have won a hat-trick of trophies at Roland Garros in 93 years.

Justine Henin 2006 french open

The jeers were brief in the French Open rematch between Serena Williams and Justine Henin. The result was the same.

Henin won again.

Keeping Williams on the move with her versatile shotmaking, three-time champion Henin advanced to the semifinals with a 6-4, 6-3 victory on Tuesday.

The meeting was their first at Roland Garros since 2003, when a semifinal victory by Henin included boos for Williams and left a bitter taste on both sides.

The lone jeers this time came when a frustrated Williams slammed her racket to the clay when she lost serve in the opening game of the second set.

The boos quickly subsided, and while the crowd favoured the French-speaking Henin, they applauded Williams when she left the court after the match.

Some facts of the French Open

The very first French Championships were held in 1891, the winner was a Englishman, named "H. Briggs"
and Françoise Masson won the first ladies competition in 1897. However, the French Open did not
become a truly international sport until the early 1920s, when the tournament was opened to other
nations in 1925. Then in 1928, the tournament was moved to Roland Garros, its current home to
the French Open we know today.

THE EARLY HISTORY OF REAL TENNIS

French Open Schedules and Dates

Real Tennis as it is called in Britain, Royal Tennis as it is called in Australia, Court Tennis as it is called in the States, Jeu de Paume as it is called in France or Tennis as it is properly known, is the oldest of all the racket games, and unlike most of the others, such as squash or lawn tennis, it is a product of evolution rather than pure invention.

The game started to form into something recognizable in the 11th century. It started as hand ball, played by monks around the cloisters of monasteries in Italy and France, much as schoolchildren do in any appropriate corner of their school, and rules varied to suit local whims and conditions. Gradually, as monks traveled to other monasteries, the more enjoyable rules were more generally adopted, the more bizarre rules abandoned and people started to add features to their courtyards that improved the pastime, and demolish or modify others that detracted from it. The monks enjoyed the game so much that the Pope banned the playing of it, and by the 14th century the game had spread from cloister to castle and become a game of the nobility...
