WimbledonWimbledon is widely considered to be the most prestigious event in all of tennis and rightfully so. After all, this penultimate Grand Slam showcases 19 trademark grass courts, 258 of the best singles players in the world and, of course, the beautiful. Plus, the Championships boast passion & tradition unrivaled by any other tournament in the game.

The nineteen courts used for Wimbledon are all composed purely of rye grass. The speed and the low bounce of grass courts favours serve and volley players. Serve and volleyers such as Rod Laver, John McEnroe, Boris Becker, Stefan Edberg and Pete Sampras have all won the Championships. However, baseliners such as Björn Borg have also performed very well, as have all-court players like Roger Federer. Among women, the serve and volley strategy is less common; one of the few female serve and volleyers, Martina Navrátilová, won Wimbledon on
a record nine occasions.

The main show courts, Centre Court and No. 1 Court, are normally used only for two weeks a year, during the Championships, but play can extend into a 3rd week in exceptional circumstances. The remaining seventeen courts are regularly used for other events hosted by the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. The show courts will, however, be pressed into action for the second time in three months in 2012 as Wimbledon will host the tennis events of the 2012 Olympic Games.

Wimbledon Tennis Betting Online

Betting Wimbledon futures (for example, Lleyton Hewitt to take out the Australian Open men's singles title) is the simplest example of a futures bet.

Australian Open Match betting (for example, Roger Federer to beat Joachim Johansson in the second round)
to the number of games that the Fed Express loses in eliminating Pim Pim from the prestigious tournament
(for example, 0-5 inclusive, 6-10 inclusive or more than 10).

Tennis betting opportunities start with Australian Open tennis betting in January, then French Open odds
in May, Wimbledon Tennis odds in June/July and US Open betting opportunities in August.

The two major associations are described below

ATP Tour
In 1988 members of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) convened a press conference in the parking lot at the US Open to announce to the world that they were taking over control of the game. The use of the parking lot emphasized the point that they were banned from using on-site facilities by the then ruling body, the Men's Tennis Council. By 1990 a significant number of players as well as tournament directors had signed up.

This has evolved into something that is quite unique in the sporting world, an equal partnership between players and tournament organizers. In January 2001 the ATP Tour name was shortened to ATP
.

WTA Tour
The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) went through a similar battle as the ATP to improve the lot of women tennis professionals. Back in 1970, women were being paid only one third of the prize money that men were earning.

It took a handful of determined players to buck the system and start up their own 3 tournament circuit.
In the following year this grew to 19 tournaments and the rest is history. Equal prize money for men and women's now the standard for international tennis.

Wimbledon 2007 Winners

Roger Federer

Roger Federer won a very tough 5 set match against Rafael Nadal 7-6 (7), 4-6, 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-2. This victory gave Federer 5 Wimbledon championships in a row! Wow, I didn’t really think anyone would ever tie Bjorn Borg’s record of winning 5 straight Wimbledons. Pretty amazing.

Venus Williams

Venus Williams was the lowest ranked woman to win a Wimbledon championship. Venus defeated Marion Bartoli of France 6-4, 6-1. This was also Williams’ fourth championship victory at Wimbledon.
